Memorandum of Understanding IAEG – ICOMOS

With the aim of expanding the potential for collaboration between experts in Engineering Geology and other scientific communities, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Italian groups of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) and the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

ICOMOS, with over 11,000 members worldwide, is an international non-governmental organization associated with UNESCO, dedicated to the preservation of monuments and cultural heritage worldwide. It is the only global organization of its kind, committed to promoting the application of theories, methodologies, and scientific techniques to the conservation of architectural and archaeological heritage.

Additionally, ICOMOS serves as an advisory body to the World Heritage Committee for the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. In this capacity, it reviews nominations for World Cultural Heritage and monitors the state of conservation of already listed properties.

The agreement was signed in Florence on October 26, 2024, by the President of ICOMOS Italy, Prof. Ing. Maurizio Di Stefano, and the President of IAEG, Prof. Claudio Margottini, during the Conference “1964-2024 The Venice Charter. Theoretical reflections and operational practices in the restoration projects”. The ceremony was also attended by the President of ICOMOS International, Prof. Teresa Patricio.

We are confident that this agreement will foster numerous and fruitful collaborations between IAEG and ICOMOS in the field of Geosciences applied to the Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
